In 1204, during the Fourth Crusade, a Western Christian army sacked and looted the city of Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Crusaders' actions resulted in the weakening and eventual downfall of the Byzantine Empire, which had already been weakened by decades of internal conflict.
