1279: Mongolian victory at the naval Battle of Yamen ends the Song Dynasty in China

In a major naval battle during the Southern Song Dynasty, the Mongol Empire, led by Kublai Khan, defeated the Southern Song fleet. This victory led to the collapse of the Song Dynasty and the establishment of the Yuan Dynasty in China. The battle is considered one of the largest naval battles in history.

1644: Loyalty to the Emperor leads to suicide of 200 members of Peking imperial family and court

During the Ming-Qing transition, the Chongzhen Emperor of the Ming Dynasty committed suicide in Beijing. In an act of loyalty, over 200 members of the imperial family and court also committed suicide. This event marked the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty in China.

1863: Confederate cruiser SS Georgiana destroyed on her maiden voyage with a valuable cargo

The SS Georgiana, a Confederate cruiser during the American Civil War, was destroyed on her maiden voyage while carrying a valuable cargo of munitions and medicines worth over $1,000,000 at the time. The wreck was discovered by teenage diver and underwater archaeologist E. Lee Spence exactly 102 years later, making it one of the most valuable wrecks ever discovered.

1895: Lumière brothers record their first film footage

Auguste and Louis Lumière, two French inventors, recorded their first film footage called Sortie des Usines Lumière à Lyon. The 50-second-long film showed workers leaving their factory in Lyon and is considered the first ever recorded motion picture in history. The Lumière brothers are credited as pioneers of the film industry.

1911: First International Women's Day observed by over 1 million people

Initiated by German socialists Clara Zetkin and Luise Zietz, the first International Women's Day was observed by over 1 million people in several European countries. The event aimed to raise awareness of women's rights and suffrage and has since become an annual global event.
